You always managed somehow. Lists, alarms, a good memory for what mattered, maybe a bit more effort than other people needed, but it worked. And then, somewhere around 40, it stopped working. Appointments slip through, words vanish mid-sentence, your mind jumps from one open tab to the next, and the smallest thing throws you off emotionally. You wonder whether you are losing your mind.

You are not. What many women experience in this phase has a biological basis that has only been well described in recent years: the hormones that helped regulate your brain for decades fall out of rhythm in perimenopause. What can you do to support your brain?

1. Protein at breakfast. Dopamine is made from the amino acid tyrosine, found in protein-rich foods. A protein-rich breakfast with eggs provides the building blocks for dopamine production early in the day, when focus matters most.

2. Movement as a dopamine lever. Physical activity acutely raises dopamine and noradrenaline availability in the brain. Even a brisk walk or a short strength session before a focus-heavy task can improve concentration. Regular training also works through cellular energy.
